Roman Name Attestations

This map shows the people named in Roman stone inscriptions — soldiers, merchants, freedwomen, magistrates, slaves — drawn from over half a million texts in the Epigraphic Database Clauss-Slaby (EDCS), spanning 27 provinces of the Roman Empire.

Names were extracted automatically using a language model and grouped by individual, so you can follow a person across multiple inscriptions and sites. Each marker on the map represents one or more inscriptions from a single find-spot. Extractions are unreviewed and will contain errors — treat this as a research aid, not a definitive index.

How to explore:

  • Browse by region using the province selector, or start with All Regions
  • Search by name, translation, or inscription text
  • Click a marker to see the people named in that inscription
  • Follow "See all N attestations" to find every known appearance of a name
  • Use filters to narrow by gender, confidence level, or social category
